In this workshop you'll delve into the art of crafting a traditional wooden cup known as a Kuksa. During the day  participants will have the unique opportunity to create their own Kuksa, gaining insight into the traditional techniques and tools used to crafts this iconic wooden vessel. 
Join us for a full  day of woodworking, where you'll transform fresh locally wood into a functional and aesthetically pleasing Kuksa to cherish and use for years to come.

Traditional Wooden Cup Carving. 

This half-day workshop is a perfect introduction for children and adults to learn how to use whittling knives safely and effectively. It is ideal for families who want to practise woodcraft at home, on camping trips or out in the woods! 

Together as a pair, each parent/adult and child will use traditional green woodworking tools to whittle and decorate your very own marshmallow-toasting forks and carve your very own vintage spinning top - a delight for anyone aged 8 to 80!

Wow!  What a fabulous day!  It was very focussed but relaxed.  A lovely mindful day with something to take home at the end!  The instruction from Ben and Hugh was brilliant. An enjoyable - if full-on day led by  Hugh.  Starting with a split log and ending up with a carved bowl.  Every stage clearly explained and demonstrated.  Sharp tools and other equipment made available as required and a friendly, collaborative environment maintained throughout.  

The setting is pretty rustic, but the large frame tent (Presumably ex military?) was an ample size for the small group of us to all work in and provided reasonable shelter against the strong wind and rain of the day.

In practice it was a struggle to complete all stages before the light went, so many people, me included will probably be finishing up their bowls at some future date in home workshops or similar - however, one can hardly blame the limited daylight hours on the organisers, December has short days, deal with it!  Plus I understand that plans are in place to instal solar power shortly so that lighting will improve.  

Overall a great and enjoyable experience, both well thought out and delivered.

This full-day workshop will give you everything you need to turn a log into a beautiful, usable cooking spoon to take home with you!

They also plied us with coffee and kept the fire blazing, so we were nice and warm even though it was a cold day. Delicious soup too!

Want to take your greenwood carving to the next level? Made a few spoons, and wondering where to go from here? This FULL-DAY WORKSHOP will equip you to progress onwards and upwards in your spoon-making journey. As well as recapping on best practise techniques, we will look more in depth at spoon proportions, adding in the ‘crank’ element and looking at decorative options – added features/bark handles/asymmetrical designs. Starting with a freshly cleft section of a log, we will carve an EATING SPOON for you to take home and try out on your morning bowl of porridge! 

We will be using and refining techniques with an axe, straight knife and hook knife, focussing on safety and economy. The course is suitable for people who have carved at least 3 spoons before.
